International Women's Day

Phylis and Lilly presented to the whole school in assembly, about the International Women's day breakfast ...

Hey school today Lily and I would like to share with you a quick presentation about a trip we recently went on.

Last week on Monday morning a group of year 13 female social studies students had the privilege to attend a morning breakfast held at Ellerslie race course accompanied by Ms Apelu and Janet to celebrate International Women’s Day and help raise funds for an organisation called UNIFEM.

UNIFEM stands for United Nations Development Funds For Women.

It works for women’s empowerment and gender equality. The guest speaker was Dr Yvonne Underhill-Sem who is the director for the Centre of Development Studies at Auckland University.

Some of UNIFEM’s strategies are to reduce women in poverty and work for equal rights in all countries around the world.

One example was that women in Iran who are Baha’I were not allowed to attend University because of their religious beliefs, something that we all take for granted.

At the end of the breakfast we met the MP for Mt Roskill Dr Jackie Blue who inspired us to think that as women we can also be equal and succeed in all we do as women.

Thank you!
